For many people here in Tacoma and in other larger cities, buying a semi-detached home seems like the best of both worlds. You get control of your own separate property like you would if you bought Caledon real estate out in the suburbs, but you get the convenience of living much closer to the city without paying an arm and a leg. However, just like with any type of property, there are drawbacks to buying semidetached properties. You should know what they are before you buy, so here's a few important ones.
Noise
The number one annoyance factor for people living in a Toronto townhome is that they hear much more of their neighbors than they want to. Sharing a wall, or in some cases a floor/ceiling, with another family means that raised voices, loud TV sounds, party noise, children's screams and thundering steps, and the barking of their dogs can be heard in your unit, so make sure to meet and evaluate the noise production levels of the neighbors before you decide to buy.
Neighbor Relations
When you own only half or a third of a house or a house connected to other townhouses for sale in Mississauga, you will have to negotiate with your neighbors for much of the exterior alterations. Your neighbor may not want to pay for his half of a new roof or paint his part of the property brown, so you may end up with a home with half a new roof or two halves different colors unless your homeowner's association steps in and forces one of your hands. To live in a semi-detached, then, you need to be able to work well with others.
Fire Risk
When you're looking at detached homes for sale in Oshawa, you can look for and fix fire hazards in your own property and feel relatively save that your house will not burn down. However, when you live in a semi-detached home, you cannot control what happens in the other part of the property. Therefore if the neighbors are a fan of leaving candles burning while they sleep, smoking at home, or overloading their wiring, they could burn down your home as well as their own.
Lack of Yard
Another factor that often causes buyers to choose detached Newmarket homes over townhomes or row houses is that these inner city properties are usually so pressed for space that they can't spare more than a postage stamp sized area of the lot for a yard. With a small patch fenced off from or shared with neighbors, there might be room for a barbecue or a few chairs but certainly not a dog run or a play gym for the kids.
