The Hilltop Neighborhood is a historically African American neighborhood. Hilltop is near the historic Tacoma Library main branch, Bates Technical College, the Pierce County Courthouse, and the new Pierce County Correctional Facility, all of which are located on Hilltop's east side. It is adjoined by Tacoma's more affluent Stadium District.
Downtown Tacoma is located primarily between Pacific Avenue and St. Helens, in the inner Northeast section of Tacoma. Downtown Tacoma started its major effort of revitalization efforts with the renovation of Union Station in 1990 and has continued to date. The Tacoma City Council passed the Local Improvement District for St. Helens Street in April of 2006, which was designed to improve areas which have been neglected. Downtown Tacoma is well known for historic buildings most built at the end of the 19th century. The buildings include the Old City Hall Building, Union Station, Elks Temple, Bostwick Building and the Winthrop Hotel.
The Stadium District is located between the affluent North Slope residential neighborhood and the relatively distressed Hilltop neighborhood. The area shares more in common with Tacoma's downtown owing to its urban nature and large population of apartment-dwelling working class residents. The area consists primarily of businesses and apartment buildings, some with views of Commencement Bay.
Other neighborhoods in the Tacoma area include St. Helens Neighborhood, McKinley Hill, North Slope, The Wedge, Delong Park, College Heights, Foss Waterway, and many, many more.
